Since ancient times the Tzutujil people have called their community Tinamit Tz'ikin Jaay, the House of Birds. To this day, one has only to look at the inhabitants of Santiago Atitlan to see scores of woven and embroidered birds fluttering over their bodies.
The purpose of this project is to reweave the house of birds; the fabric of the community which was traumatized by the armed conflict, and devastated by hurricane Stan. The means by which we propose to do this is through their ancient art of weaving, metamorphosized by straddling tradition and innovation.
